BANGUED, Abra – Because of the increasing number of  dengue cases among  school children,  the  local government unit (LGU)  conducted  last week fumigation or defogging  at the  Holy Spirit Academy of  Bangued on the request of  its school director, Monsignor Nilo S. Peig.

Even  as the  local health department here has  not declared the area as a dengue epidemic, school  administrators  decided to ask the intervention of the municipal health department of Bangued LGU through Mayor Ryan S. Luna  before the condition gets worse.

Luna also  dispatched a team headed by   Councilors   Walter Benedito and Salvacion Borja, chairman and member respectively of the Sangguniang Bayan Committee on Health and Community Services,   to super vise the fogging operation.

The  LGU has  been conducting massive campaign against dengue through information and education campaign as well as massive cleaning of the surroundings through their Food-for-Work program. Aside from these, the LGU also does other  interventions as deemed necessary.

Meanwhile, Abra Provincial Hospital Chief Nurse Catherine F. Cabunoc clarified that there are two confirmed deaths due to dengue  in the province  and not three as earlier reported.

Luna  stressed that   “the negligible number of two deaths only must not be taken for granted and should not be a reason for us to keep our arms folded and not do anything to avert further damage that the disease could possibly cause to our people.” ** Maritess Beñas/PIA-Abra
