CSC urges government employees to exercise

BAGUIO CITY-  The Civil Service Commission is encouraging government employees to undertake physical fitness activities in their respective offices to avoid health problems.

CSC city director Adela Esteban said CSC noticed most government employees are only sitting down in their office desk for the whole day facing computers and paper works.  Thus, the  CSC is encouraging local government units, government line agencies and all other civil servants to have a physical fitness program and activities.

She said CSC Memorandum Circular Number 8  reiterates  the Physical Fitness program or the Global Filipino Workout which aims to develop a healthy and alert workforce.

The MC 8  provides the allotment of a reasonable time for regular physical fitness exercise and inclusion of physical fitness exercises, seminars training programs and similar occasions.

It also authorizes one hour each week for the conduct of health awareness program and 20 minutes daily for the conduct of wellness or fitness program.

Esteban said the government offices could invite the Department of Health or any medical groups and doctors to conduct lectures on health awareness and guidance for employees including the lectures on communicable diseases, rainy day disease and other things necessary. Physical activities such as walking and exercise are also encouraged to be done by employees.

But Esteban cleared that government service should not be disrupted when employees go out for an exercise or walk. She  stressed  personnel complement may be  grouped  who shall undertake such activities in different times of the day and different days of the week.

Employee activities should also be monitored so the physical exercise would not be an excuse for employees not to perform their duties as civil servants.

The CSC also wants adoption of plans for the continuing physical fitness and sports activities and these shall be integrated in the agency’s health and wellness programs. *(JDP/RC-PIA CAR)
