LAGAWE, Ifugao- The Department of Health (DOH),  local government units  and various stakeholders  here    team up in fighting dengue in the province.

Last  August 31, Dr. Lyndon Lee Suy, an expert of dengue from the DOH  National Capital Region was in   the province as  speaker in  a health  forum held at the Lagawe open gymnasium. He reminded local health workers, local government officials, the education sector and all concerned to lead the way in taking preventive measures.
Dr.  Tess Kalugdan of the Ifugao Medical Society said that this forum will help minimize the proliferation of  dengue cases  that are on the rise in the province.
The Ifugao Provincial Health Office said  that as of August 21  this year, a total of  725 cases throughout the province is the highest in the region. Kiangan  recorded  the highest cases  at  226 followed by Lagawe, 209;Banaue, 76; Hingyon,53; Hungduan and Lamut with 48 each; Asipulo, 47; Tinoc,  6; Mayoyao,5; Alfonso Lista,4 and Aguinaldo,3. Most of the cases belongs to the 1 to 20-years old age bracket.

The IPHO reminded parents to be vigilant because the fatality rate is greater than one percent in that age group. The IPHO has  been advicing people suffering from flu-like symptoms   to  immediately seek medical attention in the nearest health facility so that they will be properly diagnosed.

The DOH reminded the public that the most cost-effective way to fight dengue is to keep the surroundings clean and  to "search and destroy" the breeding places of dengue-carrying mosquitoes.

Among the practical preventive measures include the covering of water storage containers, installation of screens on doors and windows, use of mosquito nets and insecticides if warranted.

LGUs at the municipal and barangay levels also  visited barangays with high dengue cases and conducted clean up activities.

The outset of the rainy season is considered to be the time for the rapid increase in dengue fever cases because of the existence of many breeding grounds of the mosquitoes in residential and public places.

But DOH  noted that the  trend has  changed and dengue is no longer just a "rainy season disease" as cases are being reported nationwide throughout the year. **Vency D. Bulayungan/PIA-Ifugao
