BAGUIO CITY,  (PIA) - - The Philippine Health Insurance Corporation or PhilHealth has just rolled out an anti-pneumonia vaccine package  dubbed as ‘60+ na Ako at Ok sang Bakuna Ko Laban sa Pulmonya’ for their lifetime members.

PhilHealth Regional Office – Cordillera (PhRO-CAR) Information Officer Maggie De Rosario, in an interview, disclosed that this new health package which was launched last May 15, is a public-private partnership between PhilHealth and global healthcare company Merck, Sharpe and Dohme (MSD). This  aims to provide pneumococcal vaccine to PhilHealth lifetime members at a discounted price of P600, which is approximately 60 percent off  from its regular market price.

According to Del Rosario, such partnership between PhilHealth and MSD will help bring pneumococcal vaccine to more people who can benefit from it, as despite  being vaccine-preventable,pneumonia remains to be one of the top causes of morbidity and mortality in the country  especially for older people.

She  also stressed  that the partnership is supported by public information campaign to educate people about the disease and the value of prevention through vaccination  as well as to encourage continuous premium payments to reach lifetime membership and thus be able to avail of their benefits.

PhilHealth Lifetime members are those of retirement age (60 for gov’t/private employee and 56 for uniformed personnel) and have completed or accumulated 120 contributions to PhilHealth and Medicare. Once a qualified and registered lifetime member, a person does not need to pay monthly premiums anymore and he is entitled to all PhilHealth benefits  for life.
Del Rosario bared  that  as of April 30, 2012,  there are 13,879 Lifetime members in Cordillera  can  benefit from the program.
To avail of the discounted vaccine rate, PhilHealth Lifetime members will   have to bring their membership card to PhilHealth-accredited hospitals designated as Vaccine Access Points (VAPs). In the case of Cordillera, these are  the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC), Luis Hora Memorial Hospital in Bauko Mt. Province  as well as Conner District Hospital and Far North General Hospital and Training Center in Apayao. (JDP/CCD-PIA CAR)
