BANGUED, Abra – The Tahanang Walang Hagdan in Vigan City, a special project of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) based at the District House in Bangued is still open to accept more beneficiaries to live in the “Tahanan”.

Sr. Theogenia Magallanes, OSB, the administrator of the Tahanang Walang Hagdan, said, they can still accommodate at least five  disabled persons who are willing to live with them in the Tahanan and at the same time capable and willing to be trained in livelihood activities and later earn for their own subsistence.

Established in 1986, the Tahanang Walang Hagdan in Vigan City was founded by Fr. Bernhardt Raas, SVD, a Swiss-German who was assigned in the City but is now in Switzerland. Its primary aim is to help in the rehabilitation of disabled persons.

In an interview with Fr. Antonio Alagao, SVD, president of the foundation managing the operation of the Tahanan, this is funded by Kinderhilfsproject (help children project) in Germany.

Kinderhilfsproject is an association of benefactors who raise funds purposively to support the operation of the Tahanang Walang Hagdan. The members of the Kinderhilfsproject provide cash assistance to the disabled children.

The foundation also reached out to the disabled children  in Anra through a sponsorship scheme for  four years now.

This year, a special Christmas gathering was held at the SVD District House in Brgy. Ubbog-Lipcan, Bangued last week.   Gifts in cash and in kind which were sent by their Kinderhilfsproject benefactors   were distributed to the 40 disabled children. 13 units of wheelchairs, also from Kinderhilfsproject, were given out to the disabled children who needed the equipment.  **Maritess Benas/PIA-Abra
